About Me
I've been in construction most of my life, with over 40 years and more than half of that on the gulf islands. I started as a labourer and worked my up to carpenter then finish carpentry and ultimately Passive House trained designer.
In 1992 my father asked me to draw the house plans for his new house on Pender Island, and I was hooked. I started designing new homes, additions, renovations or any project really, and that was the beginning of HLDS. I really enjoy the whole process from concept and design to seeing it through to construction.
My experience in most aspects of construction has given me a deep understanding of how it all fits together. When i design a new house, it's not just about a pretty picture, i'm constantly evaluating the practicality of what i'm proposing. Is this feature realistic, cost effective, will the engineers curse me? I have a responsibility to my clients to do my best to make sure what we plan is possible within the budget and meets my their expectations.
I had always been fascinated by the solar homes popular in the 1970s, but i never felt there was a complete, practical solution. Every option had its issues, both practically and aesthetically. Big glass walls or windows to let in the free heat from the sun during the winter is great, but it led to over heating in summer. They required insulated shutters to be closed at night to keep the heat in, but that's ugly and cumbersome.
Then i heard about Passive House and I lost my mind. They had thought of everything. Dr.s Feist & Adamson looked at the issue of energy efficiency as a whole system scientifically. Each solution naturally will have a knock-on effect somewhere else in the system. For example, making a house air tight to eliminate air leaks, solves a heat loss problem, but causes serious issues with indoor air quality. High levels of VOCs, particulates and humidity make the house literally uninhabitable. After years of study, proven science and experimentation, considering each aspect and its benefits and consequences, they arrived at a comprehensive method, proven in the real world.
I guess i'm a bit of a geek. Every part of the process is exciting to me, from design to construction and of course energy efficiency. In August 2018 I received my Passive House certification as a PH Consultant. I have designed 5 super energy efficient homes here on Pender Island, built with the Passive House method, and i live very happily in one myself.
