Artist's Modern Forest Studio

Inspirational Art Studio

There are vibrant arts communities on the gulf islands. This modern painters' studio is tucked into the forest on Pender Island, warmed by dappled sunlight and wrapped in trees and natural rock formations. The client wanted not only a suitable place to paint, but a space that she could directly draw inspiration and subjects from the scene right outside.
As a painting studio, lighting is of paramount importance. good, natural lighting is essential but direct sunlight must be avoided. short windows placed at floor level allow sunlight to stream in and reflect off the polished concrete floor. Likewise, high windows tucked under the eaves allow sunlight in but keep it high on the walls and by placing them on all four sides provides ample diffused light to create a bright, virtually shadow free space.

More than just a painting studio, the client wanted room for relaxing and contemplation. We included a small sitting area with two glass and wood doors that slide out of the way to bring in the smells and sounds of this tranquil setting. by adding a compact bathroom, we created a space that also doubles as a unique guest retreat.

The use of metal and local cedar trim plants the studio in it's surroundings, to help minimize the visual impact of building in such a beautiful location. Raising the whole structure on piers makes the structure appear visually lighter as you approach.
