Modern Mix
Lighthouse Lane
This open plan, loft style, 1 bedroom home on Pender Island was our first House on Pender. I designed and then built it, replacing the unique but neglected original cottage . A simple profile with vaulted ceiling to make the space seem large and bright and to create an opportunity to add interior beam details. Exterior siding is a blend of modern corrugated galvalume metal siding with trim and mass blocks softened with local cedar board & batten.
Capitalizing on my construction experience and skills, we built it ourselves, and had the privilege to spend the time to add details and play with features. We sourced local fir and cedar trees that we milled on island to produce the wood siding, beams and trim. I took far too long to complete, but it was worth it in the end. If you want shoes for your children, don't marry a cobbler.
By vaulting the ceiling and creating the loft, we were able to gain a modest view of the ocean and gulf islands to the south. A loft can buy very efficient and inexpensive bonus space by tucking useable room under the roof. The loft provides two office areas and our den / guest sleeping area. By opening up the loft space above the bedroom and bath it gives a sense of the overall house footprint, and adds volume to the main floor living area.
