Modern Addition

Young Cottage

The owners of this quaint cottage had owned the Pender Island lot since the 80's, and right away had their cousin build a small 10 x 12 cabin so they could come and enjoy the summers while dreaming of building something more. The original cabin is very sentimental, so this project was about preserving that nostalgia while creating the additional space they require to spend more time here through all seasons.

Their needs are modest and this allowed us to retain the natural aesthetic of the site by nestling the addition into the trees and natural rock formations. By working with the natural features instead of fighting them, we created a home that rests comfortably in its environment and embraces the lifestyle we cherish on the Southern Gulf Islands.

A modest 1 bedroom with a compact ensuite in the original cabin, opens out into a breezeway with walls of windows facing the ocean views to the south and rock features and trees to the north. Though this space is relatively small, it feels spacious and open and the large windows create intimacy with the natural, rustic location. Open plan living with kitchen and eating area that expand or contract as needed when guests or grandchildren visit, allows the whole space to feel roomy and inviting. A separate bathroom with shower, and large closet that efficiently houses the stacking washer and dryer with plenty of room for coats and additional storage makes this cottage compact, yet functional. The grandchildren love the cozy loft above the bathroom for sleepovers, and it makes an awesome fort!

Wrapped in natural, warm tone cedar shingles with accents complimenting the trees and rocks, this home seems to almost hide. As you approach down the drive that winds through the forest, the house is slowly revealed, promising a cozy, warm embrace while wide windows tease with glimpses through to the sea views beyond.
